Spider-Man 4 moves forward with Dunst

Kirsten Dunst is officially on board with Spider-Man 4.  Rumors have swirled for a while now that the actress may not reprise her role, but producer Todd Black told the New York Post that Dunst is definitely part of the fourth film.  Some hate Dunst in the role, but personally I think she’s done very well with the material she had to work with.

Bigger news is the villain for the fourth film.  Black won’t say for sure who it’ll be, but did say, “We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.”  Hmm, who could that be?

Black did confirm it would be a classic comic book villain and not someone created for the film, so shades of Superman 4 do not apply.  But what classic villain?  Someone part of New York?  Perhaps someone they have already set up?  Who might travel through sewers?  The Lizard seems a pretty safe bet, but who knows?

One thing they certainly need to do with this film is focus.  Spider-Man 2 worked so well because the film was focused.  Yes, there were minor subplots, but they never got in the way of the main story focusing on Spider-Man versus Dr. Octopus.  Spider-Man 3 allowed subplots about Harry, Venom, and Peter going bad to derail the main flow of the film.  While I didn’t personally hate it as much as some, it certainly was an extremely flawed film and one of the worst of the recent comic book films.
