Creating a new Scream trilogy when there is no need

scream

Of course, there is rarely a real need for any new installment in a horror franchise.  However, in the case of Scream this is especially true.  The original film trilogy told a complete story, neatly wrapped up.  Well, as neat as could be expected for such a convoluted story in the first place.

That hasn’t stopped work from starting on a new trilogy.  Wes Craven told Digital Spy that work has begun on a script for the first part in a new trilogy by original screenwriter Kevin Williamson.  Along with Williamson, actors Courtney Cox Arquette and David Arquette are also apparently returning.  But Craven?  He’s not so sure.  Craven said…

Bob Weinstein (The Weinstein Company co-chairman) has talked to me, he’s interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson], I know that Kevin is writing. What I’ve said to Bob is I’m not closed to it, I’m not open to it, I’ll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That’s where it’s at and I’m not expecting a script until August. I don’t know what the premise is or anything.

It just wouldn’t feel the same without Craven, and it seems odd that they would only bring back the Arquettes and not anyone else.  What about Neve Campbell?  She’s not doing much else these days.

The bigger question to me, at least, is why?  Yes, there’s the obvious money reasons, and it isn’t exactly like Kevin Williamson has been a hit factory lately, but is that the only reason?  Scream sort of tied up all the loose ends and to go anywhere else would feel incredibly forced, one assumes.  I’d rather see Williamson and Craven try something new together.

They actually did do something new together after the Scream movies. It was that bad werewolf movie called Cursed. I think Wes Craven needs to actually write something new, not just direct other people’s scripts.

True, however in defense of Cursed there was a lot of studio involvement with the final product, which I believe included recasting and reshooting much of the film after it was half done.

Craven does have a new film he wrote called 25/8 in development, but previous to that New Nightmare was the last film he wrote.
