Zelda steps into third dimension by returning to roots

Just how confusing is the headline to this post? This of it this way—if this headline were the instructions on how to successfully save yourself from a rapidly depressurizing submarine you found yourself stranded in at the bottom of the ocean, well, you’d be dead by now. Thankfully no such peril exists…for now.
Instead, the headline is in reference to the image above of a 3D version of the original The Legend of Zelda for the NES. Yes, someone took the 8-bit original and transformed it into a 3D FPS engine. Some people do indeed have too much time on their hands, but what do you care? You get to see/play cool things thanks to it.
The creator is a forum poster by the name of Radix, whom you can find here. That someone even attempted such a project is cool, but what it says about core gameplay mechanics is perhaps even cooler. The original Zelda was so well crafted that even taken into another genre, it still generally fairs well. Yes, their are some issues with controls (Link’s reach), and the gameplay does feel a tad more tedious in this version, but the basic mechanics hold up. The level design, character design, and overall aesthetic retain their charm even when flaunted for their horrible out datedness. Good games don’t die, but neither, apparently, do they fade away.
